Modern Appliance Maintenance: A Quarterly Checklist

You rely on your kitchen appliances every day, and a breakdown can be a major problem. This appliance maintenance checklist will help you master the ins and outs of routine maintenance so you can keep your tools running better for longer.

Why Regular Maintenance Is Essential

Few appliance owners fully realize the importance of regular maintenance. When you practice regular maintenance, at least once a quarter, you experience benefits like:

  • Fewer breakdowns: Well-maintained appliances generally experience breakdowns less often than poorly-maintained ones, reducing unnecessary costs.
  • Better efficiency: A well-maintained appliance will use less energy than a poorly-maintained one, resulting in lower energy bills and better overall performance.
  • Extended lifespan: With regular servicing, most appliances have a considerably longer lifespan, meaning you’ll need to replace them less often and get more out of your investment.

Quarterly Maintenance Tasks

Now that you understand the benefits of maintenance, complete these tasks every three months to keep your appliances running smoothly.

Washers and Dryers

Washers and dryers are some of the most frequently used appliances in most homes. Their maintenance requirements include:

  • Check and clean vents, ducts and filters, replacing or repairing them as needed.
  • Deep clean the interior drum using a wash cycle for a washer and a vacuum for a dryer.
  • Test any safety features to ensure the system is still safe to use.

Dishwashers

To keep your dishwasher running smoothly, ensure you complete the following tasks regularly:

  • Deep clean the interior by running an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaning product.
  • Remove and check the spray arms for clogged nozzles or mineral buildup. Clean them as needed.
  • Check that the door seals are working properly, and wipe them down using a cloth moistened with vinegar.
  • Inspect the plumbing for leaks, cracks, or other concerns, and replace or repair hoses if needed.
  • Check and clean the dishwasher filter, replacing it if needed. Look for any damage.

Refrigerators

Your refrigeration system preserves your food, so maintaining it is essential. Routine maintenance includes:

  • Clean the refrigerator coils with a vacuum or brush to prevent overheating.
  • Inspect and wipe down the door gaskets to ensure a proper seal.
  • Empty the drip pan of any standing water.
  • Clear the drain hole inside the fridge to ensure water can escape.
  • Check that the refrigerator is standing level and adjust as needed.

Twice a year, you should also check water supply lines for leaks and kinks, and replace the water filter to keep things running smoothly.

Stoves and Ovens

Your stove or oven is the cornerstone of your cooking experience. Keep it clean and functioning by doing the following:

  • Deep clean the entire appliance, except for electronic components.
  • Check that the door seal is clean, flexible and intact — replace it if needed.
  • Inspect the heating elements or burners to ensure they work fully.
  • Test that all components are working properly and safely attached.
  • Clean the oven vents and, if you have a kitchen exhaust hood, clean the filters.

Garbage Disposal

You use your garbage disposal daily, so ensure it gets the maintenance it needs:

  • Deep clean the system by pouring two cups of ice cubes and a cup of rock salt down the disposal.
  • Degrease the system by pouring half a cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar down the drain.
  • Inspect for leaks and check that gaskets are in good shape
